Hrothbert of Bainbridge, a powerful sorceror who lived approximately 800 years ago in the British Isles. He lost his heart to the sorceress Winifred. When she was slain, he could not bear to live without her and resurrected her using black magic, "transgressing, several times" the laws of magic. In so doing, he destroyed them both. Caught and executed by the High Council for his transgressions, Hrothbert's soul was condemned to be bound for all eternity to his own skull and to serve whoever possessed the gruesome artifact.

As a ghost, he is an invalible font of archane knowledge but is powerless to effect the physical world around him. Having served a long line of evil and/or dubious masters, his skull is now in the possession of one Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden. Harry is someone who wants to make a difference in the world, defending the weak and the helpless. Hrothbert (affectionately called "Bob" by Harry), is finding that he rather likes being one of the good guys for a change.

Hrothbert is fiercely and unconditionally loyal to Harry and will do anything in his power to defend/protect him.
